Description
The Borne Ultimatum Guided Hike | 5 Wainwrights, Scale Force & Buttermere
Take on The Borne Ultimatum
Ready for one of the ultimate Wainwright challenges in the Lake District?
The Borne Ultimatum is a spectacular 22km circular mountain adventure starting and finishing in Buttermere. Along the way, we’ll summit five Wainwrights, cross some of the finest ridges in the Western Fells and visit the impressive Scale Force waterfall.
Our route takes in High Crag, High Stile, Red Pike, Starling Dodd and Great Borne, with around 1,200 metres of ascent throughout the day.
This is a serious mountain adventure. However, the rewards are incredible, with dramatic ridges, huge panoramic views and some of the Lake District’s most beautiful scenery.
Five Wainwrights Around the Western Fells
First, we’ll leave Buttermere and begin our climb towards the high fells.
As we gain height, the views across Buttermere and Crummock Water become increasingly spectacular. We’ll then reach High Crag, one of the most dramatic summits above the valley.
Next, we’ll continue across the high ground towards High Stile. This iconic Wainwright offers breathtaking views across the surrounding Western Fells and towards the distant mountains.
From here, we’ll continue towards Red Pike, enjoying more incredible mountain scenery along the way.
Three Wainwrights down, two to go.
Into the Western Fells
After Red Pike, we’ll leave the busier mountain routes behind as we continue towards Starling Dodd.
This quieter Wainwright gives us a real sense of wilderness. The views stretch across the Western Fells, with the dramatic outline of the surrounding mountains providing an incredible backdrop.
Finally, we’ll reach Great Borne, completing our fifth Wainwright of the day.
Great Borne provides a fantastic viewpoint towards Ennerdale Water and the surrounding mountains. Take a moment to enjoy the achievement before we begin our journey back towards Buttermere.
Scale Force and the Journey Home
The adventure isn’t over once we’ve completed the five Wainwrights.
On our return towards Buttermere, we’ll visit Scale Force, one of the Lake District’s most impressive waterfalls.
At around 40 feet high, Scale Force is the highest single drop waterfall in the Lake District. Surrounded by woodland and dramatic rock scenery, it makes a fantastic final highlight to an already incredible mountain day.
From here, we’ll continue back towards Buttermere, completing our 22km circular route.
