Its distinctive teardrop like shape, dramatic surroundings and dark waters make this one of the most spectacular hidden gems in the Lake District. A natural rocky amphitheatre beneath High Street

There was a bit of unwanted cloud, but the sun rising over the North Yorkshire Moors was absolutely incredible.

After watching the sunrise, we hiked over to Captain Cook’s Monument before returning to Roseberry Topping, finishing the morning with a full breakfast at the King’s Head Inn.

Definitely worth getting up for!

The side of Ben Nevis most people never see… This The side of Ben Nevis most people never see…

This is the North Face of Ben Nevis, photographed from the CMD Arête.

Most people who climb Ben Nevis experience the mountain from the Mountain Track, but head round to the north and you see a completely different beast.

Huge cliffs, dramatic ridges, deep gullies and some seriously wild mountain terrain. Add a little cloud swirling around the tops and it feels like you’ve suddenly stepped into another world.

And honestly, I think this has to be one of the most epic mountain views in the UK.

The CMD Arête gives you a front row seat to it all, with the North Face towering beside you as you make your way towards the summit of Ben Nevis.

WOW! The Coledale Horseshoe was amazing yesterday! WOW! The Coledale Horseshoe was amazing yesterday! What a day!

Probably one of the best horseshoes in the Lakes, and we had absolutely perfect conditions. Lovely sunshine, blue skies and some incredible views all the way around the valley.

Massive well done to Morag, Tracey, Fran and Eleanor on completing this challenging hike. You all did brilliantly, and what a day to take on the Coledale Horseshoe!

Kirsty and Claire joined us for the first half of the route, before deciding to drop down and follow Coledale Beck out of the valley and back to Braithwaite.

Sometimes knowing when to make that decision is just as important as reaching the summit, and they still enjoyed a fantastic morning in the mountains.

Another brilliant day out with a fantastic group of hikers.

🏔️ Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête Last Wednesday, it 🏔️ Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête

Last Wednesday, it was time to take on Ben Nevis, but not by the usual route!

The start was definitely boggy once we left the forest behind. Wet, squelchy and muddy underfoot, and the descent was just as much fun!

But we weren’t in any rush. It was all about enjoying the day, taking our time and making the most of the route.

The CMD Arête is where the real fun begins!
The ridge is great, with plenty of hands on sections, a bit of exposure and, of course, some absolutely amazing views.

The view across to the North Face of Ben Nevis is simply ace. Standing on the CMD Arête with that huge wall of mountain rising across the valley is pretty special.

It really gives you a completely different perspective of Ben Nevis and makes all that boggy walking worthwhile!

And a special mention to our European Mud Wrestling Champion… she certainly knows how to embrace the Scottish weather! Absolutely brilliant effort today!

A very special Ben Nevis birthday challenge Today A very special Ben Nevis birthday challenge

Today I had the absolute privilege of taking Nicola and her friends up Ben Nevis for her 40th birthday.

But this wasn’t just another hike.

Nicola and Ann first became connected when Nicola saw a Facebook appeal and made the incredible decision to donate her kidney to Ann.

Two complete strangers became great friends.

Today, against the odds, they stood together on the summit of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain at 1,345m, surrounded by their friends.

And what makes the story even more special is that they were doing it to raise awareness of altruistic kidney donation and raise money for Give a Kidney.

Some of Nicola’s friends had never hiked before, yet they dug deep, supported each other and kept going until they reached the summit.

As a guide, days like today are incredibly rewarding. Watching people achieve something they perhaps never believed they could do, and knowing there is such an amazing story behind it, makes it even more special.

I honestly couldn’t be prouder of Nicola, Ann and every single one of their friends.

So far, they have raised over £500 for Give a Kidney, helping to raise awareness of altruistic kidney donation and the difference it can make to someone’s life.

If you would like to support this amazing cause, you can donate here:

Huge thanks to everyone involved today.

A very special day, an incredible achievement and a story I won’t forget.

Happy 40th birthday, Nicola. What a way to celebrate.

Striding Edge at Night Guided Hike | Sunset & Helvellyn

Experience Striding Edge Like Never Before

Ready for a mountain adventure after dark?

Join us for our Striding Edge at Night Guided Hike, starting and finishing in Glenridding. This unique Lake District adventure combines a spectacular sunset, the summit of Helvellyn and a return journey across Striding Edge in complete darkness.

First, we’ll climb from Glenridding towards the famous Striding Edge. As the sun begins to set, we’ll make our way along this iconic mountain ridge.

Then, we’ll continue towards the summit of Helvellyn, one of the Lake District’s most famous mountains.

However, the adventure doesn’t finish at the summit.

After enjoying Helvellyn, we’ll return towards Striding Edge. This time, we’ll experience the famous ridge in darkness.

It’s a completely different experience.

Striding Edge at Sunset

To begin, we’ll leave Glenridding and start our climb towards the high fells.

As we gain height, the views across Ullswater will become more impressive. Meanwhile, the changing light will begin to transform the surrounding mountains.

Eventually, we’ll reach Striding Edge as the sun starts to set.

This is one of the most exciting mountain ridges in the Lake District. The narrow ridge provides incredible views across the surrounding fells and towards Ullswater.

Along the way, we’ll take our time and enjoy the sunset. There will also be opportunities to stop for photographs and appreciate the incredible scenery.

Summit Helvellyn

Next, we’ll continue from Striding Edge towards the summit of Helvellyn.

At 950 metres, Helvellyn is the third highest mountain in England. As a result, reaching the summit is a fantastic achievement.

Once at the top, we’ll take time to enjoy the views and celebrate reaching one of the Lake District’s most famous summits.

Afterwards, we’ll begin our journey back towards Striding Edge.

However, this time things will be very different.

Striding Edge in the Dark

Now, we’ll experience Striding Edge at night.

With our head torches lighting the way, we’ll return across this iconic ridge in darkness.

The familiar landscape will have completely changed. Instead of seeing the mountains around us, we’ll experience the ridge through the beam of our head torches.

Because of this, the atmosphere becomes very different.

Every step requires concentration. Therefore, we’ll move carefully and steadily as a group.

Your guide will lead the way and manage the route throughout the night section. In addition, we’ll make sure everyone is comfortable with the conditions before continuing.

This is the part of the adventure that makes the hike truly unique.

Why You’ll Love This Striding Edge Night Hike

This isn’t a standard Helvellyn guided hike.

Instead, you’ll experience one of the Lake District’s most famous routes in two completely different ways.

First, you’ll cross Striding Edge as the sun sets. Then, you’ll stand on the summit of Helvellyn after dark.

Finally, you’ll return across Striding Edge in darkness before descending back towards Glenridding.

The combination of sunset, mountain scenery and night hiking creates an unforgettable experience.

Your qualified and experienced mountain guide will take care of the navigation, pacing and safety throughout the hike. Therefore, you can concentrate on enjoying the adventure.

What to Expect

  • A fully guided Striding Edge night hike
  • Start and finish in Glenridding
  • Experience Striding Edge at sunset
  • Summit Helvellyn, 950 metres
  • Return across Striding Edge in darkness
  • Spectacular views across Ullswater
  • An unforgettable night mountain adventure
  • Experienced mountain guide throughout
  • A small and friendly group atmosphere

Is This Hike For You?

This is a challenging mountain hike.

A good level of fitness is essential. In addition, previous mountain walking experience is strongly recommended.

Striding Edge is an exposed and challenging mountain ridge. Therefore, you need to be comfortable with heights and steep, rocky terrain.

The route also involves walking in darkness. Because of this, you must be confident using a head torch on uneven mountain ground.

Most importantly, this is not a suitable hike for anyone who is uncomfortable with exposure or scrambling terrain.

Your guide will assess the conditions throughout the hike. If necessary, the route may change because of weather or mountain conditions.

Important Information

  • The hike takes place partly in darkness.
  • A good quality head torch is essential.
  • Spare batteries are strongly recommended.
  • A good level of fitness is required.
  • Previous mountain walking experience is strongly recommended.
  • Striding Edge includes exposed and rocky terrain.
  • Some sections require the use of hands.
  • Your guide has the final decision on participation and route choice.
  • For safety, the planned route may change due to weather or mountain conditions.
