Its distinctive teardrop like shape, dramatic surroundings and dark waters make this one of the most spectacular hidden gems in the Lake District. A natural rocky amphitheatre beneath High Street

There was a bit of unwanted cloud, but the sun rising over the North Yorkshire Moors was absolutely incredible.

After watching the sunrise, we hiked over to Captain Cook’s Monument before returning to Roseberry Topping, finishing the morning with a full breakfast at the King’s Head Inn.

Definitely worth getting up for!

The side of Ben Nevis most people never see… This The side of Ben Nevis most people never see…

This is the North Face of Ben Nevis, photographed from the CMD Arête.

Most people who climb Ben Nevis experience the mountain from the Mountain Track, but head round to the north and you see a completely different beast.

Huge cliffs, dramatic ridges, deep gullies and some seriously wild mountain terrain. Add a little cloud swirling around the tops and it feels like you’ve suddenly stepped into another world.

And honestly, I think this has to be one of the most epic mountain views in the UK.

The CMD Arête gives you a front row seat to it all, with the North Face towering beside you as you make your way towards the summit of Ben Nevis.

But I want to know…

WOW! The Coledale Horseshoe was amazing yesterday! WOW! The Coledale Horseshoe was amazing yesterday! What a day!

Probably one of the best horseshoes in the Lakes, and we had absolutely perfect conditions. Lovely sunshine, blue skies and some incredible views all the way around the valley.

Massive well done to Morag, Tracey, Fran and Eleanor on completing this challenging hike. You all did brilliantly, and what a day to take on the Coledale Horseshoe!

Kirsty and Claire joined us for the first half of the route, before deciding to drop down and follow Coledale Beck out of the valley and back to Braithwaite.

Sometimes knowing when to make that decision is just as important as reaching the summit, and they still enjoyed a fantastic morning in the mountains.

Another brilliant day out with a fantastic group of hikers.

🏔️ Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête Last Wednesday, it 🏔️ Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête

Last Wednesday, it was time to take on Ben Nevis, but not by the usual route!

The start was definitely boggy once we left the forest behind. Wet, squelchy and muddy underfoot, and the descent was just as much fun!

But we weren’t in any rush. It was all about enjoying the day, taking our time and making the most of the route.

The CMD Arête is where the real fun begins!
The ridge is great, with plenty of hands on sections, a bit of exposure and, of course, some absolutely amazing views.

The view across to the North Face of Ben Nevis is simply ace. Standing on the CMD Arête with that huge wall of mountain rising across the valley is pretty special.

It really gives you a completely different perspective of Ben Nevis and makes all that boggy walking worthwhile!

And a special mention to our European Mud Wrestling Champion… she certainly knows how to embrace the Scottish weather! Absolutely brilliant effort today!

A very special Ben Nevis birthday challenge Today A very special Ben Nevis birthday challenge

Today I had the absolute privilege of taking Nicola and her friends up Ben Nevis for her 40th birthday.

But this wasn’t just another hike.

Nicola and Ann first became connected when Nicola saw a Facebook appeal and made the incredible decision to donate her kidney to Ann.

Two complete strangers became great friends.

Today, against the odds, they stood together on the summit of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain at 1,345m, surrounded by their friends.

And what makes the story even more special is that they were doing it to raise awareness of altruistic kidney donation and raise money for Give a Kidney.

Some of Nicola’s friends had never hiked before, yet they dug deep, supported each other and kept going until they reached the summit.

As a guide, days like today are incredibly rewarding. Watching people achieve something they perhaps never believed they could do, and knowing there is such an amazing story behind it, makes it even more special.

I honestly couldn’t be prouder of Nicola, Ann and every single one of their friends.

So far, they have raised over £500 for Give a Kidney, helping to raise awareness of altruistic kidney donation and the difference it can make to someone’s life.

If you would like to support this amazing cause, you can donate here:

Huge thanks to everyone involved today.

A very special day, an incredible achievement and a story I won’t forget.

Happy 40th birthday, Nicola. What a way to celebrate.

Experience One of the Lake District’s Most Dramatic Ridges

Discover the spectacular western Lake District on our Illgill Head and Whin Rigg Guided Hike. This rewarding mountain adventure takes you above the shores of Wastwater, England’s deepest lake, and across one of the most dramatic ridges in the Lake District National Park.

With two Wainwright summits, incredible views and the famous Wastwater Screes as your backdrop, this is a fantastic guided hike for anyone looking to explore a quieter side of the Lake District.

The route offers a brilliant combination of mountain scenery, challenging climbs and spectacular viewpoints. It also gives you a chance to experience the rugged beauty of Wasdale without the crowds found on some of the Lake District’s more famous peaks.

A Spectacular Journey Above Wastwater

First, we’ll begin our ascent towards Illgill Head, gradually gaining height above the shores of Wastwater.

As we climb higher, the views become more impressive. Looking back, you’ll see Wastwater stretching into the distance, surrounded by some of the Lake District’s most impressive mountains.

Next, we’ll reach the summit of Illgill Head, standing at 726 metres. This Wainwright summit provides an incredible viewpoint across Wasdale and towards the surrounding Western Fells.

From here, we’ll continue along the ridge towards Whin Rigg, taking in the dramatic landscape as we go.

The Famous Wastwater Screes

One of the highlights of this hike is the incredible view across the Wastwater Screes.

Rising dramatically from the eastern shore of Wastwater, the screes create one of the Lake District’s most recognisable landscapes. Their steep slopes fall towards the lake, creating a truly impressive mountain scene.

As we continue towards Whin Rigg, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop, catch your breath and take in the views.

Finally, we’ll reach the summit of Whin Rigg, our second Wainwright of the day.

From the summit, enjoy spectacular views across Wastwater, Wasdale Head and the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can see towards some of the highest peaks in England, including Scafell Pike.

Why You’ll Love This Guided Hike

This route offers a fantastic combination of mountain adventure and incredible scenery.

You’ll experience two Wainwright summits while exploring one of the Lake District’s most dramatic landscapes. The views across Wastwater alone make this a memorable mountain day.

Your qualified and experienced mountain guide will take care of the navigation, pacing and safety throughout the hike. That means you can focus on enjoying the challenge and taking in the scenery.

This guided hike takes place within the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the UK’s most spectacular mountain landscapes.
